Chamber Opera II

On 17th December 2016 at the Esplanade Recital Studio, Kris Foundation presented Chamber Opera II, the second series of chamber operas commissioned by Chamber.Sounds, featuring compositions by Dr. Paul Smith (Australia) and Dr. Li Kai Han Jeremiah (Singapore).

The largest production to date, this concert opened up new possibilities of programming in the Kris Foundation’s concert season.

The Rose and the Nightingale (2016)

The Rose and the Nightingale is based on Oscar Wilde’s proverbial tale of a student’s unrequited love. Including themes of love, sacri ce, sel essness, pity, materialism and gratitude, the story's plot is set in motion when a nightingale overhears a young student express his fears about losing the young woman he loves forever. The young woman threatens to abandon the student unless he gives her a red rose. Taking pity on the student, the nightingale sacri ces her life in order to procure a red rose for the young man. However, the birds' sacri ce proves to be in vain.

Dr. Jeremiah Li is a lecturer at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore, and heads Chamber.Sounds, a contemporary chamber music group which seeks to promote local contemporary music to Singaporeans and the rest of the world.

The Spider-Maiden and the Runaway Plum Blossom (2016)

This chamber opera is in seven scenes and is inspired by traditional Japanese haiku which commonly re ect on the transition between the seasons. The plum blossom is a common signi er of spring. The plot of the opera follows the Plum Blossom who is caught in the Spider Maiden's web while attempting to see the world by riding on the wind on the last day of spring. The two characters sing about their respective positions in the world and the Spider Maiden o ers the Plum Blossom one opportunity to be set free by solving a musical riddle.

Dr. Paul Smith is a lecturer in music at the University of New England where he teaches composition and music theory. Dr. Smith’s compositions explore music's potential connection with other art forms and as a result his pieces are often accompanied by other works of art, including animation, theatre or poetry.

For Khoo Hui Ling, playing the piano is a reflective meditation. It is a vulnerable and precious expression of what is in the heart beyond where words can go. For her doctoral thesis, she produced short documentaries that show how Chinese traditional music and painting come together in Tan Dun’s 8 Memories in Watercolor, culminating in a highly praised multimedia performance of the work. Musings of an Artist: Khoo Hui Ling was a culmination of Dr. Khoo’s doctoral thesis from the University of Oregon, USA.

On 8th July 2016 at the Esplanade Recital Studio, Kris Foundation presented Tango Salon, featuring Singaporean violinist Gabriel Lee. Delivering a fresh spin on the classical violin recital with a dynamic tango programme, Gabriel was joined by pianist Jonathan Shin, cellist James Ng and harpist Charity Kiew. Our founder Kris Tan saw great potential in Gabriel Lee when she attended his graduation recital at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music. She sought to bring a different music experience and unique programming of Kris Foundation through Tango Salon.

Kris saw great potential in Gabriel when she attended his graduation recital. Gabriel Lee is a multi-faceted musician: he performs early music with his baroque violin, crossover music with his instrumental band the Lorong Boys and other fusion groups, and fresh interpretations of the classical canon on his modern violin. His playing has been described as having a “breathtaking intensity, grabbing listeners by the lapels without letting go”, and “a passion and concentration that was hard to surpass” by The Straits Times.

The Journey Back Home

In celebration of Singapore’s golden jubilee (SG50) and in collaboration with The Community Foundation of Singapore, Kris Foundation presented The Journey Back Home at Victoria Concert Hall. The concert stems from re ecting upon a journey back home to pay tribute to the nation that explores what it means to belong. It is often said that home is where the heart is. But the heart is no careless creature, capable of calling anywhere home. It grows slowly, but rmly; and when displaced, holds on tight to its experiences, like roots hold on to nourishing earth.

Kris Foundation commissioned a new work by Singaporean composer Phang KokJun. In Journey On, Phang sought to bring out from the sights and sounds of Singapore’s past, present and future. “Then” From how early immigrants to Singapore felt as they travelled in search of new dreams. “Today” outlines the dizzying pace of today’s world. “Tomorrow” begins with an empty and uncertain atmosphere, including the theme from the rst movement as a reminder of the reason why this “Journey” began.

Trails of Creativity

On 2nd August 2014 at the Esplanade Recital Studio, Kris Foundation presented Trails of Creativity, featuring Singaporean pianist Thomas Ang. Our founder Kris met Thomas while he was an accompanist at a voice recital in Singapore. Immediately attracted to his sense of musicianship as well as the ease in which he worked with people, she immediately invited him to perform with Kris Foundation. We continue to be impressed by his depth of expression and breadth of musical knowledge.

Thomas Ang graduated from the Royal Academy of Music, London and has won prizes for his performances of Beethoven, Frederick Delius, Arthur Bliss and the contemporary piano repertoire. Regrets and Resolutions: In Concert with Jed Huang and Miyuki Washimiya

On 25th August 2012 at the Esplanade Recital Studio, Kris Foundation presented Regrets and Resolutions: In Concert with Singaporean autist Jed Huang Jia Jia and Japanese pianist Miyuki Washimiya. When Kris first met autist Jed Huangg at a national music competition, his performance captivated her with his strong determination. While he did not clinch the top prize, Jed had no regrets but only resolutions to make. Kris was inspired by his grit and motivation to push himself further.

In Kris Foundation’s first solo flute recital, Jed gave the Singapore premiere of Tan Mizi’s Flute and Drums under the Setting Sun, composed in 1980. This unaccompanied piece was written for Jed’s father, Mr Shao-Jiang Huang (former principal ute of the Shanghai Ballet Orchestra and Singapore Symphony Orchestra). The music describes the landscape of the river under the moon in Spring using a simple melody and uid rhythm and is reminiscent of a roll of landscape painting. This piece has been performed by many renowned autists including Jean-Pierre Rampal, Alain Marion, Guo Liang Han, Sheng Qi He and Emmanuel Pahud.

Divertiment: Life and Vitality

Divertiment was the first chamber music concert presented by Kris Tan. Chamber music was once described by the English composer and pianist Richard Walthew as “the music of friends”. Bringing together four musicians of diverse experiences and backgrounds, and blurring the lines between student and teacher, unified by our common passion for music-making. Chamber music is often considered as the highest form of music-making as it requires excellent team dynamics, astute listening and high standards of musicality.

The La Vida Quartet, joined by pianist Celine Tan, presented two major works in chamber music repertoire - Mozart’s Dissonance Quartet and Schumann’s Piano Quintet.

Wassy Fantasia: Miyuki Washimiya Piano Recital

On 17th November 2009 at the Esplanade Recital Studio, Kris Tan presented Wassy Fantasia: Miyuki Washimiya Piano Recital. As the rst concert that evolved into Kris Foundation’s signature recital series, it was Kris’s desire to be part of the nation’s arts scene that prompted her to host Japanese pianist Miyuki Washimiya in her debut recital in Singapore.

Singaporean composer Tan Chan Boon’s Reminiscence, Op. 55 was originally commissioned for the Young Virtuoso Recital of the 2008 Singapore International Piano Festival. Its second movement - Fugue I - originally composed in 1995, was a standalone work that received its world premiere in 2000. It was later adapted to become the second movement of Tan’s Op. 55. Tan likens the work to a journey deep down into a forest, eventually seeking light and hope.
